Building on Parenting Interactions with Children: Checklist of Observations Linked to Outcomes (PICCOLO)

Audience: This training is intended for new or experienced home visiting staff, new to using the PICCOLO screening tool in their program.

Home visiting programs receiving funding through the Washington Home Visiting Services Account (HVSA) will receive early registration access.

Learning objectives: After completing this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify positive interactions between caregivers and children.
  • Connect positive interactions to positive child development, socio-emotional growth and school readiness skills.
  • Communicate with parents about their strengths and ways to build on successes.

Details: Training will take place virtually over three 2-hour sessions.

Introductory Video

Refresher: Building on Parenting Interactions with Children: Checklist of Observations Linked to Outcomes (PICCOLO)

Audience: This refresher course is a high-level review of the 4-part training. It is designed for home visitors or supervisors who have completed the full PICCOLO training within the last five years.

Home visiting programs receiving funding through the Washington Home Visiting Services Account (HVSA) will receive early registration access.

Learning objectives: After completing this training, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the different domains of the PICCOLO tool.
  • Use the PICCOLO to give parents strengths-based feedback on positive interactions.

Details: This training will take place during one 2-hour session.

April 17 from 2 – 4 p.m. PST

Introductory Video

Parent-Centered ASQ-3 Screening and Referrals

Audience: This training is designed for new home visiting staff as well as experienced home visiting staff seeking a refresher on using the ASQ-3 screening tool in partnership with families.

Programs receiving funding from the Washington Home Visiting Services Account (HVSA) will receive early registration access.

Learning objectives: Participants will be prepared to:

  • Frame the ASQ-3’s purpose and process for families receiving home visiting services.
  • Adapt the ASQ-3 questionnaire items to align with families’ beliefs or settings.
  • Score and discuss results with families in an empowering way.
  • Facilitate referrals for further evaluation and developmental resources.

Details: Training takes place over two 4-hour virtual sessions. Two training options are available:

Sept. 6 and 13 from 12 – 4 p.m. PST

Feb. 20 and 27 from 12 – 4 p.m. PST

Healthy Families Parenting Index (HFPI) Core Training

Audience: This training is designed for home visitors and supervisors who are new to using the HFPI in their home visiting practice.

“The Healthy Families Parenting Index (HFPI) is a valid and reliable outcome measure that was designed to examine change in nine parenting domains: Social Support, Problem-Solving, Depression, Personal Care, Mobilizing Resources, Role Satisfaction, Parent-Child Interaction, Home Environment, and Parenting Efficacy.” – LeCroy & Milligan Associates

Learning objectives: Participants will be prepared to:

  • Administer, score and use the HFPI in clinical practice with families.
  • Discuss strengths, concerns and “red flags” that are revealed in the HFPI score.
  • Utilize the HFPI in supervision, case planning and curriculum planning.

Details: Training takes place over two sessions: a self-paced webinar that participants review prior to the training and a 2-hour live session.

Introductory Video

Perinatal Mental Health for Home Visitors

Audience: This five-part training is designed for new home visiting staff. Experienced home visiting staff are encouraged to sign up for individual sessions that serve as a refresher or an opportunity to dive deeper into topics of interest.

Programs receiving funding from the Washington Home Visiting Services Account (HVSA) will receive early registration access.

Learning objectives: After completing this training, participants will:

  • Understand the biological, individual, social and societal impacts that parenthood has on mental health.
  • Feel comfortable talking with parents and caregivers about their mental health, including using screening tools such as the PHQ-9.
  • Connect families to resources that can provide additional support within the context of family values and culture.
  • Be equipped to provide non-clinical mental health supports that are within the scope of home visiting, such as active listening and wellness planning.

Details: Training will consist of two pre-recorded videos and five live training sessions. The pre-recorded videos will provide an introduction to mental health concepts, while the live sessions will be interactive and discussion based. Two training options are available:

Home Visitor Readiness Training

Audience: This training is recommended for all home visitors and supervisors.

Programs receiving funding from the Washington Home Visiting Services Account (HVSA) will receive early registration access.

Learning objectives: Participants will learn:

  • Strategies to address unique field related concerns around physical well-being while providing home visits.
  • Field-readiness procedures that should be in place before and during a home visit.
  • How other agencies handle emergency field concerns and the policies they have in place to support staff and families’ well-being.
  • How to reflect on cultural norms and biases embedded in field-related concerns.

Details: This training is a 2-hour virtual webinar. There are two training options available:

Jan. 25 from 1-3 p.m. PST

June 27 from 1-3 p.m. pst
