Supporting Maternal Mental Health Through Moving Beyond Depression

Learn how the Moving Beyond Depression program integrates mental health care into home visiting programs to support caregivers, strengthen families and improve child development outcomes.

The earliest years of a child’s life are shaped by relationships. When caregivers have the support they need – emotionally, physically and socially – they are better able to nurture their children’s healthy development

But for many families, the transition to parenthood can also bring significant challenges, including depression.

An estimated 16–20% of birthing individuals experience depression during the perinatal period, affecting both caregiver well-being and the parent-child relationship that is so critical during the early years.

At Start Early, we see firsthand how mental health challenges can affect families participating in home visiting and doula programs. While such programs provide essential support during pregnancy and early childhood, depression can make it harder for parents to fully engage with services designed to help them and their children thrive.

Identifying depression is an important first step, but without accessible treatment options, many parents face barriers that prevent them from receiving the care they need.

That’s why Start Early partners with local services to implement Moving Beyond Depression, an innovative program originally developed by researchers at Every Child Succeeds® and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center that integrates mental health care directly into home visiting services.

What is Moving Beyond Depression?

Moving Beyond Depression embeds licensed therapists directly within home visiting programs, utilizing treatment materials designed specifically for parents of infants and toddlers.

Key features of the program include:

Licensed therapists embedded within home visiting teams

Because families often meet the therapist through their home visitor, the program creates a trusted “warm hand-off” that makes it easier to begin treatment.

Rather than referring parents to outside clinics, which can create barriers such as transportation challenges, stigma or long wait times, therapists meet families where they already receive services: in their homes.

Close collaboration between therapists and home visitors

This integrated approach allows therapists and home visitors to work together as part of the same team, ensuring families receive coordinated, accessible support.

Why Maternal Mental Health Matters for Child Development

The early relationship between a caregiver and child lays the foundation for healthy development. When a caregiver is experiencing depression, it can affect:

  • An infant’s ability to self-regulate
  • Early language development
  • Secure attachment with caregivers

Over time, untreated maternal depression can increase the risk of emotional and behavioral challenges for children later in life. By addressing depression early, programs like Moving Beyond Depression help strengthen caregiver well-being, while supporting positive developmental outcomes for children.

A Family’s Story: Finding Support Through Moving Beyond Depression

For one young mother, Arike, the program became a turning point.

After becoming pregnant and moving into a residential maternity home in southern Illinois, Arike began feeling overwhelmed by the responsibilities of parenthood. During a routine screening, her home visitor identified symptoms of depression and introduced her to a Moving Beyond Depression therapist.

Together, the therapist and home visitor supported Arike as she worked toward her goals.

Over time, Arike:

  • Moved into her own home
  • Secured a job at a dental office
  • Built confidence in her ability to care for her baby

Most importantly, she began to feel hopeful about her future as a parent.

Building Stronger Systems of Support for Families

At Start Early, our work with families begins before birth and continues through the earliest years of childhood. Through our Home Visiting & Doula Network, we support more than 1,400 birthing parents each year, connecting them with resources that strengthen both caregiver well-being and child development.

Programs like Moving Beyond Depression ensure families receive comprehensive support – addressing not only developmental needs, but also mental health. Because when caregivers are supported, children thrive.
